These people had lived in a technocratic society recovering from a war with an alien race. Pern was colonized by settlers originally from Earth, First Base on the Moon, and the colony at Alpha Centauri. Eventually, they labelled the planet with the acronym: Parallel Earth, Resources Negligible (i.e., insufficient to support interstellar commercial investment). Despite the beauty of the planet, the EEC team was puzzled by a repeated random pattern of circles of bare dirt which they observed across the whole globe. One member of the EEC team, Shavva, found the pristine planet so beautiful that she struggled to remain objective. They recorded geographical, geological, botanical, ecological and zoological information in a variety of locations, some of which are recognizable as areas of interest in other Pern stories. The EEC team spent ten days assessing the planet. ![]() This is in keeping with McCaffrey's themes of space exploration and colonization to escape from a polluted and overcrowded Old Earth, explored in many of her different series. Aideen begins somewhat rough at the edges and soon becomes a character readers can easily root for: Between her mother’s drinking problem and her own failing grades, Aideen deals with issues faced by many young people. Smyth paints a snapshot of someone who appears to have everything sorted but on the inside is falling apart at the seams. ![]() She silently struggles with her own home life while solving the issues of others to cope with her feelings of helplessness. Aided by Kavi Thakrar, a witness to Aideen’s pushing Meabh down the stairs-part of their harebrained scheme-Aideen soon finds herself running a favor-for-favor business for the student body.
